Reykjavik bears the distinction of being the world’s northernmost capital, and for many Icelandic visitors it also serves as a gateway to the rugged adventure options beyond. Recharge after outdoor pursuits in one of the many geothermal springs or luxurious indoor spas. We appreciate Reykjavik’s open-minded and energetic culture that includes a hip and internationally recognized music and arts scene, great food and notoriously “enthusiastic” nightlife.
8 Patios for Sensational Summer Eats and Drinks
Summer in Atlanta consists of a series of brunch dates with bottomless mimosas, day parties, and evenings on the patio. Everyone is always on the lookout for the newest or proven favorite spots to patronize. I recently ran across a Jezebel list of patios for an “open-air affair” and had to share. Some, like O-ku and Gypsy Kitchen, are favorites of mine while others I’m looking forward to checking out, myself!
Check out the list below. Let me know if you’ve visited any of them. Add your favorite ATL patio in the comments!
1. Fuel up with Southern bites (and drinks, of course) on South City Kitchen Buckhead’s two-story patio before painting the town with your party posse. @fifthgroup
2. O-Ku is further elevating its happening rooftop scene with the addition of frosé—the perfect cocktail to pair with sushi and a view. @okuatlanta
3. Hit Basque in the Sun with your squad for a Sunday afternoon of day-drinking and people-watching over half-priced bottles of wine from Gypsy Kitchen’s swanky rooftop. @gypsykitchenatl
4. Bring your fur baby along to sunbathe on Smokebelly BBQ’s dog-friendly patio while you and your friends enjoy live music, cold suds and hot ’cue. @smokebellybbq
5. After touring Three Taverns Brewery in Decatur, head outside to sip A Night on Ponce IPA on the charming light-strung patio. @threetaverns
PS: Adding a couple more patios that I love!
6. Six Feet Under Pub & Fish House: Both locations are bustling seafood houses that draw crowds thanks to their laid-back vibe & rooftop bars with city views.
7. bartaco West Midtown: Stylish Mexican spot serving serving classic & creative tacos along with a large drinks list. (Try the fried oyster tacos!)
8. Barcelona Wine Bar: With locations in Inman Park and West Midtown, Barcelona offers unvarnished paneling, a brick fireplace, and a shaded wraparound patio. Barcelona delivers Spanish flair to Atlanta with more than 200 wines straight from Spain and, of course, tapas.
prettysocialATL was recently tapped to photograph Tiwa Aganga-Williams, aka TiwaWorks — serial entrepreneur and CEO of Atlanta Greek Picnic — for a feature article on ESPN’s The Undefeated.
AGP is the largest summer event for black fraternities and sororities in Atlanta, which draws more than 25,000 people with an estimated $3.5 million impact.
The Undefeated is the premier platform for exploring the intersections of race, sports and culture. They “enlighten and entertain with innovative storytelling, original reporting and provocative commentary.”

As you may or may not know, I am a big WOW Airlines fan. I flew with them when I went to Iceland and I will be flying with them in a couple of months when I head to Berlin! They are mainly situated in the Northeast but offer some flights out of the West Coast as well. The current Europe deals below are mainly based out of the West but there are always reasonable East Coast tickets available. For everyone with New Years Resolutions to travel more in 2017, THIS IS FOR YOU!
As seen on Conde Nast Traveler:
Just as U.S. travelers have finally gotten used to seeing $99 airfare deals to Europe, along comes a fresh shock: $69 flights. This lower-than-ever price comes from Icelandic low-cost airline Wow Air, and the price tag of $69 is a strategic one; it’s the lowest airfare promised by fellow low-cost carrier (and competition) Norwegian Air. Their battle for your business only drives down the total, and West Coasters who’ll benefit the most from this sale. The $69 flights are available from both San Francisco and Los Angeles to Copenhagen, Denmark; Stockholm, Sweden; Edinburgh, Scotland; and Bristol, England, while Wow’s famous $99 flights are still available from New York, Boston, Miami, and Pittsburgh.
The travel time from California to Europe is thankfully broken up by a layover and plane change in Reykjavik, Iceland. If a dip in the Blue Lagoon and dinner of reindeer tartare is on your list, take advantage of Wow’s free stopover program in Iceland before continuing on to Europe.
It might seem too good to be true, but savvy flyers who read the fine print will get the most from this $69 deal. For example, Wow Air charges extra fees for everything from seat assignments ($9.99 to $50.99, depending on legroom) to bottles of water ($2.50). Be prepared to pay for food, extra legroom, and checked baggage. With an “XXL” seat of 35 inches legroom, plus a small meal and a checked bag, a passenger easily adds another $135 to the ticket, each way. To avoid the largest fees, plan to travel with only a carry-on; that shouldn’t be too difficult as Wow recently doubled its weight allowance for carry-on bags, from 11 to 22 pounds. On board, Wow is known for introducing humor and Icelandic flavor into the flying experience. Both the planes and vintage-inspired flight attendant uniforms are a bright fuchsia pink; the lavatory mirrors are painted with mustaches; flight attendant call buttons are marked with “honk if you’re hungry.”
This spring marks the airline’s second anniversary of U.S. flights and Wow’s CEO, telecom entrepreneur Skúli Mogensen, tells USA Today that he hopes the $69 flights become a regular offering and not just an intermittent sale.
How to book: Visit Wow Air’s website and search your preferred routes of those listed above. Travel dates are valid from January 15 through April 5, 2017. Although there is no official end date to this sale, book as soon as possible for the best availability of routes and dates at the $69 level. As the planes fill up, prices rise.
When I visited Iceland back in November, I did a decent amount of souvenir shopping. Christmas was coming up plus nobody else I knew had ever been there, so I tried to include as many friends and family members as I could afford. (Note: Iceland is expensive so… I couldn’t actually afford that many people… lol) But I remember being given an envelope with one of my receipts at a gift shop in Vik and thinking “Oh, aren’t they formal with their receipts?” lol. Come to find out, I had spent a qualifying amount so I was eligible to receive a tax REFUND upon departure.
That’s right, folks. There is a value added tax assessed to everything you purchase BUT if you spend ISK 6,000 – 6000 Icelandic krona or at little less that $60 USD – on any one receipt, you can submit it to the bank at the airport and receive cash or a refund back to your card. I had completely forgotten about the 2 receipts I submitted before boarding my flight until yesterday when 2 deposits from Premier Tax Free ISK hit my account.
I was like Heeyyyyyy $24.01!
Its not a million dollars but it IS almost a full tank of gas so Thank Ya!
All of the shops have the proper envelops and signage available to anyone who qualifies so if you are planning to visit Iceland, be sure to keep up with your receipts as you go and submit before your departing flight. The Keflavik Airport is very helpful with this process as well. There are several reminder signs as you enter the doors and the actual refund line was very quick and efficient.
If you’ve been before, did you get know about the VAT refund?
Are you planning a trip to Iceland soon? You can check out the Keflavik Airport site here for more info on this tax and refund process.
I just came back from Iceland. Yes, that’s what I said, Iceland. Reykjavik, Rekjanes, the Golden Circle, Vik… and lots of places in between.
Everyone’s first question is always “Why Iceland?” And my response is always “Why not?”
I mean, I’ve never been before, not very many people have… I found a great deal on a plane ticket so I booked it. Continue reading “ég tala ekki íslensku (I dont speak Icelandic)… but I went anyway”
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It is a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
That being said, after months of laboring and contributing to the strength and prosperity of this country, its time for a vacation! They’re projecting 500,000 people will be headed to ATL for the holiday weekend so I’m taking my talents to the West Coast. Realistically, the numbers probably won’t be much better in LA (if not worse) but hey, its been a year since I’ve seen my Daddy so… LA it is!
Last year, I made him take me to Compton — I was still on a Straight Outta Compton movie high… lol. We did the Long Beach Pier, Hollywood Sign, the Walk of Fame, Manns Chinese Theater… All the tourist-y crap. Now I’m trying to put together my to do for this go-round. So far I’ve got the LA County Fair and Santa Monica Pier. Both probably still pretty tourist-y but hey, I’m a tourist. What can I say? I also think they’ll provide pretty dope photo opportunities so, cliche or not, I’m excited. Gonna drop some of my favorite pics from my last trip down below. Let me know what are some must-see/ must-do things I should add to my list!

In The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell talks about the central role that three personality types – Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen – play in social epidemics. What makes someone a Connector? The first, and most obvious, criterion is that Connectors know lots of people. They are the kinds of people who know everyone… PrettysocialATL exists to connect. You don’t have to know “everyone” as long as you know PrettysocialATL. We are the connect.
